WHAT IS A TRANSPONDER?
From the first sentence in Wikipedia : “In telecommunication, a transponder is a device that, upon receiving a signal, emits a different signal in response”.
If you do not understand what it means, let me explain in simple terms. For transponder car keys, an integrated circuit (ic) chip is embedded in the plastic key head. When you attempt to start the car, the coil in the ignition lock charges up the chip and read the pass codes, if the codes are valid, the car starts otherwise not start.
Transponder keys do not need battery to work. It is also not a remote control. A remote control key does not necessarily has a transponder chip inside. It all depends on whether your car is equipped with factory immobilizer. If your car comes with factory immobiliser, you would need a transponder key to start.
